Holiday Cheer

Merry Christmas everyone! I apologize for the long break between blogs. It hasn't COMPLETELY been my fault. when I changed emails, I thought that I could change this over as well. I messed some stuff up, and today is the first day that I've been able to get back in to the site. Dunno why - guess I hit a technological wall!

Thursday night we had our winter concert at Bowie. Overall, it went very well - always some stuff that we can do better, but I was pleased and enjoyed seeing the students' energy and hard work pay off. Pictures are available on the Bowie Choir website.

We're mostly done with our Christmas shopping! Yes, it's all Naunie's doing. I have no doubt that I would not have started yet if not for her. Nothing is wrapped yet though (I can't have her wrap her own gifts...). It looks like we're going to go down to visit Mom and Dad (Lobaugh side)in Houston over Christmas. It will be good to get to spend a few days relaxing instead of running around! Loni and Ben are coming down too. I can't remember if they have a chimney though (I doubt they do - it's southern Texas), so I don't know if Santa will be able to make it in. :-(

It was also great to see not only Grammy and Pa over Thanksgiving, but to see Mom, Dad, and Emma (Mead side)! They came down for a couple of days, which gave us all an opportunity to catch up, visit, and generally get to be together.

Naunie finished her class Thursday, and is now working a few days at the Scholastic Book Warehouse for their seasonal book sale. Yeah, it doesn't sound like much fun, but she's getting paid in books, so she is very excited! Of course, she came home this afternoon and is now in bed...

I guess that about catches us up. If I don't check in before, have a very safe and Merry Christmas!

Big River Tech Week

Busy busy busy! But I'm enjoying my evening - OU is ahead 35-7 in the fourth quarter, and Bowie is now 9-0, with only one more game in the regualar season!

Naunie and I actually got to have a date last night! Yes, we were around each other for more than one hour, and it wasn't for just sleeping! We went on a double date with Holly and Jimm, and we saw "Martian Child," the new John Cusack adoption movie. It was actually very nice - even if it was a little bit cliche'. Then we got to sleep in!!! Unfortunately, because Naunie is still hacking from her illness, she left some time in the night to sleep in the other room. Obviously, I wouldn't have niticed if she continued to cough in our bedroom, because I didn't know she left until I woke up this morning. I'm slowly getting the cough myself - but I don't have time to get sick, so I'm sure it'll pass... ;-)

This week I am working on getting the bowiechoir.com website up and running. Right now, there is a simple "place marker" style web site. If I can figure out how to transfer my nice Dreamweaver pages onto the site, then I'll be in business.

It's Big River tech week. We had a long rehearsal today, and Monday/Tuesday will be long rehearsal nights. The show actually runs Wednesday, Thursday, and two Saturday, so there is pretty much NO time before the show! I'm looking forward to it being over, simply so that I may get some of my time back.

Good news - I had two freshmen make the 9th Grade Region Choir! Baby steps, sure, but I'm glad for them!

September 15, huh? Guess I'm a little late on this then. The upside is that nothing drastically life-changing has happened in the last month. However, it's still been a while. I'll try to be better!

The Bowie High School Choral Department had its first concert of the year Tuesday, and by all accounts, my students did very well! I think that they felt good about it - I know I did - and I heard from several people that it was the best they've sounded for a while. Hopefully, as we get into Christmas...ooops, I mean "WINTER" music, we will continue that move upward musically! We've still got a long way to go before UIL, but we've begun the journey.

Our football team is currently 7-0, which is also very cool. We'll be televised this coming Thursday as we play Martin High School, another AISD team, that is also 7-0 coming in to the game! It will be big! Huge! And hopefully better played than our lovely Sooners are playing right now! I think that they have found some way to watch the Lobaugh household and know how well or poorly to play based on our behaviors during the game.

Naunie is taking the GRE on Saturday. So she is now studying like a mad woman! She's TRYING to blame it on me, but really, I had nothing to do with her decision making. I'm not that influential, despite what I may think! :) She would like your prayers...

We're both still enjoying our students and classes, though our schedules make it difficult to see each other during the week other than for sleeping! We went camping a couple weekends ago, just to get away from the world for a while. It was going to be for 48 hours, but we wussed out at around hour 28 and came home to sleep in a bed instead. But it was good to be out of contact for a day anyway!

I think that we both still have wish lists on amazon.com, so if you're wondering what to get us for Christmas, that would be a good place to start!

Church is going strong. We're playing the cup game and singing Rich Mullins' "Screen Door" tomorrow in the service. It will be...entertaining to say the least! C.A.S.T. is hard at work on their Christmas program. I should really find out when it is...

I'M TIRED!!!

Okay, I get three periods that are conference periods, but we've been threatened by the AISD gods not to mess around on our computers, so that's why I don't update at school. And by the time I get home, I am beat. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.

We've got three weeks down in school, and it's been a pretty good time. I've got a few students that I'm questionable about, but out of 100 students, three or four is a great average I think! Some of my freshmen are going to be great as they get older! And my men in the beginning choir are also bursting with potential. It could be an exciting few years. Of course, I still have to get through my first year! We have first round auditions for State choir on Saturday, and I've got six students auditioning. The drama teachers chose "Big River" as our musical, and rehearsals are starting for that. I know that I will be helping with the music for that. We have four weeks till our first concert (October 16, I think). And about 800 meetings because of being a new teacher to the district! It's a busy time - I am becoming less and less sure of it slowing down anytime soon...

Naunie and I bought a car last week to replace the one that is missing its fender. It's a '95 Toyota Camry with lots o' miles on it, but it also gets me 400 miles to the tank! I haven't had 400 miles to the tank since ...well, ever! The closest was my old Saturn SL2, which they don't make anymore.

Naunie is enjoying her classes this year. She has good kids. As we sit watching the NE/USC game, she's working on lesson plans. In theory, I'm calling parents about handbook signatures and choir fees, but in reality, I'm updating you on our lives. Don't you feel special now? :)

Naunie is no longer watching the babies at church. She decided that she would like to be in a bible study class. I'm still rehearsaing of course, so I do not get to go with her. We are starting our CAST program tomorrow with the elementary kids. We're doing "Mystery of the Manger." I don't expect anyone to know it - just thought I'd tell you what it was!

Kevin (Brocksieck) and Kristin are about to have their baby! I'll put up pictures if I get some when it's born. Right now, it's name is Peanut. I'm assuming it will change once the gender is known...Of course, it's Kevin, so you never know... ;-)

Everyone Hold Your Breath!!!

Only two days until my journey begins anew as a high school choir director! As I was putting together my choir handbook (borrowed liberally from three other schools in the area), I began to reminisce about Secondary Music Methods (yes, 11 or 12 years ago now). We had to put together a one page behavior contract. I'm pretty sure I remember being told that one page was all you need to have - and any more than that is overkill. Fourteen pages later, I'm done with my choir handbook. Apparently, inflation crosses over to behavior contracts, and not just money.

Bowie High School is big. Now, this wouldn't be a big problem, except that it's big and poorly organized. At least, that's the initial impression. Sure, the layout SEEMS to make sense: even halls on the bottom level and odd numbered halls on the top. But in reality? MOST. CONFUSING. SCHOOL. LAYOUT. EVER. Hopefully, I won't have to know all of it to teach my classes. I did find out that some of the teachers didn't know who the last choir director was. So my goal is to be known (in a good way) so that they THINK about the choral program at BHS. I'm sure they think about football, volleyball, and baseball. I'm relatively certain that they think about band and orchestra. They at least know that the drama department exists. But I don't think that the teachers think about choir. We gots to change that!

My lovely wife had an accident this week. Not to worry, Naunie is fine, as is the other girl involved in the accident. However, her front fender is now taking up residence in her back seat while we search for a new (re: used an inexpensive) car for her to drive. I'm working on convincing her that the '88 and '85 Oldmobile's are good deals. Not sure how well that's going to go...

We're in Omaha

Howdy all! I should have written last week, since it was my one week off before school starts, but...well, I didn't. Sue me.

The National Worship Leader Conference was great! It was a wonderful time of refreshing and renewal, and I got lots of great ideas for leading. Riverbend Church is a gorgeous complex, and the worship center was literally jaw-dropping.

Naunie and I made it into Omaha Monday night. Right now, she is playing with Addyson, Aiden (some relation by marriage) is playing a matching game, and Collin (the brother of the some relation by marriage) is DETERMINED that he does not have a milk mustache. However, we disagree, and have fixed the problem.

New Guitar

Hey guys! Here's a factory picture of my new guitar, a beautiful Crafter acoustic electric (TC035N for those of you that want to dig into the details of the guitar on the site). Because they helped us out so much this past week, I want to give a shout out to Johnny Paul's Music Shop, which is where Naunie purchased the guitar for my birthday.

How has Johnny Paul's helped this week? Well, this was Rock Camp week, and Johnny Paul's gave several very generous donations including our three grand prizes for the week: an Austin electric guitar, Sonar Home Studio Software, and a Roll Up Piano. All told, they donated over $1,200 worth of merchandise for the first FBC Aledo Rock Camp. Overall, it was a great success. We had 28 junior and senior high students participate, creating 8 bands that performed two songs each last night, ranging from "Smoke On The Water" and "Sweet Home Alabama," to "Meant To Live" and "We Are One Tonight." I think that they all had a grand time (yep, I said grand - I'm in my thirties...I'm allowed).

Next up - the birthday of my lovely wife! Naunie turns "Twenty-eleven" tomorrow. Monday and Tuesday I'm at Boys and Girls Town Training for Arlington ISD, and then I leave Tuesday afternoon to go to the National Worship Leaders Conference in Austin. So yeah, I'm still kinda busy. I do get a week "off" after that though, and I'll spend several days at my school and at the music store.

Busy-ness

Hey all,

Sorry it's been a couple weeks - haven't had much new to share. Naunie's working hard on her school work and paper writing --only two more weeks! This week began Adventure Week (VBS) at church, so I'm up there everyday. Next week is Rock Camp at church, so I will be very busy up there again. And then I will spend half the following week at Boys Town Training for Arlington ISD (Naunie's assured me that it will be the highlight of my summer...riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight) and then join Mike in Austin for the National Worship Leader's Conference. So as you can see, the next few weeks are going to be quite busy.

Naunie is going in on Thursday to cut her hair! She's been growing it since before our wedding, first so that she could do something with it ON our wedding day, and then afterword, she and Jeneille decided to let their hair grow for Locks of Love. She will be taking before and after pictures, so I'll try to post those up here when I get them from her.

First week in August, we go to Omaha! ROAD TRIP!!!

Quick Job Update

After lots of discussion and prayer, Naunie and I informed Midway Church that we would not be persuing their Worship Pastor position. It basically came down to not feeling that sense of peace and "right-ness" about the job. Timing, location, and the family at FBC Aledo were also heavy influences on our decision. Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts - we'll take them if you continue to lift them up as Naunie continues at Carter Jr. High and I begin as the Choir Director at Bowie High School.

Worship Music

A couple of nights ago, it was raining very hard - hard enough to wake me. And the cat seemed to be high on something because it was running around crazynuts in the apartment at 5:00 am. At any rate, the combination woke me up, and while I was awake, I had an interesting thought. When will "praise and worship" go out of style?

Hymns were the standard in worship for more than a few years. They are a timeless music that we still turn to today, as long as we jazz things up a bit with guitars and skip out on the organ, the key change, and the final verse being sung at a tempo not unlike a funeral march. But when you look at "praise and worship," there's an interesting phenomenon: it's already old. Dependant of the progressiveness (is that a word?) of your church, the songs that you sang 10 years ago that were cutting edge are no longer good enough to sing. The content hasn't changed. There's a good chance that the songs are biblically sound - or at least as sound as the current crop of songs that you are singing. So what's different? The music. Possibly how the words are layed out.

Remember the term 7-11 music? Songs with 7 words sung eleven times? The current group of worship leaders/writers I think have become more aware of this stigma, and are making an conscious effort to keep from writing such songs. But even still - our music today is dated. If we are basing our music in church on what goes on in the public music arena, then we may be writing ourselves out of the possiblity of creating "classic" tunes or songs that will be sung hundreds - or even thirty - years from now. Should our music be "of the moment" at the expense of the prospect of timelessness like the "old" stuff?

I'm not saying that we should only sing hymns - look at my set list for this week - but I worry that congregations will not be able to remember the great songs of their youth if the songs that are being sung are only sung for two years and then rotated out. Surely, there is a balance between culturally relevant music and the ability to create timeless songs.

Thought I'd update everyone as to what's going on in my job life. As I mentioned, I am set to serve as the Bowie High School Choral Director for the coming year. I'm excited about this opportunity, and have spent some time this week in my new classroom doing the whole "visualization" thing, as well as some cleaning and organizing. There's a huge amount of knowledge that I'm realizing I will have to bone up on in the next month to be successful, so I'm starting now. My last high school was a school of 250 or so. Bowie is 3000. There's a bit of a learning curve there! Uniform rentals, Booster Clubs, UIL rules, oh...and music. So I've got a bit of work to do!

In addition to Bowie, most of you are aware that God has laid it on my heart to serve in music ministry full time in a church. There is a church in Aubrey, TX that has spoken to me about an open position. This came at about the same time as Bowie, so God has blessed Naunie and I with a sudden abundance of opportunity, but choices had to be made in defference to what we know currently. We will be visiting with this church tomorrow (Friday), so I would appreciate prayers for discernment and clarity of understanding of His will in our lives as Naunie and I meet with the pastor and current worship pastor of the church. There are many, many doors that need to open fully for a clear understanding of where God wants us right now.

Naunie is hard at work on her two online classes for the summer. After two weeks, I have decided that online is maybe not the best way to take master's classes...she has about 500 pages worth of reading and posting with classmates online. Quite a task, I think. Naunie's been reading or at her computer pretty much nonstop this week, clocking in 10 hour days. on summer break. I know she's exhausted, so please pray for her strength and perseverance as she has another three or four weeks to go!

Life is moving, as you can see. We simply hang on and let God take us on our ride!

Reading Update

Oh, in light of my recent job decisions, I am continuing on the education reading track. Currently, since I liked his second book, I've gone back to the well and am reading THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS by Rafe Esquith. Following that, I will be reading FIRES IN THE BATHROOM: ADVICE FOR TEACHERS FROM HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS by Kathleen Cushman. Somewhere in all of this, I will be finding some books on choral music that aren't utterly sleep-inducing (ie: not textbooks!!!). I want to be the best teacher that I can be, but I didn't care for some of the books the first time I read them - I don't think I want to go back and purposefully torture myself again!

Jobstuffs

Well, I made it back from Chicago with all of my limbs and a car still in one piece, so that counts as a good trip! While I was in Chicago, I got a phone call from Arlington ISD, asking for a second interview for a high school choir position. As of Friday, I am the Choir Director for Bowie High School in Arlington! I'm excited about this new stage in my life, and I'm looking forward to (re)learning all about choral music and getting my conducting and listening chops back in line!

Chi-town

I didn't think anyone that reads this has contact with the surprise that was planned, but I didn't really mention much just in case. So, here ya go.

I'm in Chicago without my wonderful wife (trips without Naunie = not fun) to meet up with some friends from college. We were meeting together to do a surprise gig as our former group, Kenaniah, for the parents of one of the members. Harry and Barbara Brocksieck have just retired from the Salvation Army after 51 years of service. The one thing that they had mentioned to Kevin (their son) was that they would love to have Kenaniah sing at the ceremony, but there was no way that they could get us all there. So Kevin emailed all of us, and long story short, we were able to surprise the Brocksiecks at their retirement ceremony. It was great!

Their motto - or maybe vision statement? - for all of their years has been "God Is Able." It was apparent that they have seen God's mighty hand in many areas of their life and ministry. I am so grateful that we were able to share in their wonderful ceremony and support not only Harry and Barbara, but Kevin as well. It has been too long since we've been together, and I can only hope that we are able to gather again before another ten years passes.

Having said that...I would like to go home now and see my wife! Naunie has started her classes for the summer (she had class Friday, which precipitated her not coming to Chicago with me), and this week she is in an in-service for reading or some such educator type stuff. Tuesday, Naunie is interviewing for an instructional facilitator position at her school - please pray for her tomorrow!!!

One year ago today, the most beautiful and gracious woman that I have ever known said that she would live for the rest of her life with me as my bride. God has blessed me beyond measure this past year in our marriage, and I thank Him for the gift of Naunie today.

(oh, this morning she said that she'd hang around another year, so that was good too.) :)

So my Mom-in-Law called a couple of days ago and told me a wonderful story. Naunie's youngest sister, Emma, is missing us terribly. Every time Omaha calls us, we're told of stories or asked when we're coming to see them. Well, I get a phone call telling me that Emma came in the room, and would not tell what she had been up to. She was afraid of getting in trouble. After being prodded, she admitted to drawing a picture of Naunie, Emma, and myself...on the wall...of her closet. And y'know, you can't get mad at her for this! She misses us! And we miss you, Emma! We'll see you in August!

Reading Troubles

Oh, and for those of you keeping score: I am struggling with finding my next book to read. (this is why I hadn't done any real reading for so long) When I figure out what it is for sure, I'll let you know. I started on a book called TOMORROW'S GOD, but I don't think I like it. Then I started CAN'T STOP, WON'T STOP, which is a history of hip-hop. I like it alright, but there is no intrinsic value that I can glean from the bit that I've read, and I want to read things that will help in either music ministry or school. So, I'm still looking. I know there's a ton of good books out there - I just have to find the ones that interest me. BUT I'M STILL COMMITTED TO READING BOOKS!!!

Just Sittin', and Hopin', and Wishin', and Prayin'...

Well, the final two days of school are come and - sigh...ALMOST - gone. I'm sitting in my room, which is now bare of any materials (save some trash that I figure doesn't matter), typing on my laptop because my computer and all of the music room belongings are in their new summer home - a corner of the library. The music room is being moved over the summer, and my current room is being changed as well. So, all my stuff gets to be moved around twice! Yay me! Actually, I'm hopeful that the magic elves will have all of the music room stuff at least in the new room when we come back from summer break. Of course, I will have to organize it all when I get back. LOL - me and organization: what a great combination! Anywho, we do not get to leave early because the evil trolls that live out in the parking lot will eat us and grind our bones to make their bread. So I'm waiting until the appropriate time. However, I did not take a lunch break (I ate - but didn't leave the building), so I'm hoping to get out of here at 2:00. I am also curious as to whether or not my new room will be bigger than this one. Once upon a time, it was going to be two rooms put together, but rumor has it that idea has been changed. We shall see...

A Book Report On Peter Rabbit...

And kudos to anyone that actually got that musical theatre reference!

No, I did not read Peter Rabbit, but I have finished two - count 'em, TWO! - books now! Yeah, I know it's not much, but it's more than I've done in a while. This morning, I finished TEACH LIKE YOUR HAIR'S ON FIRE, by Rafe Esquith. It took me a little longer than Rob Bell's VELVET ELVIS, but it is finished! Now, I am not a good synopsis or report giver, so I won't be telling what each book is about that I read. But I will let you all know things as I think of them, or read them. I think I will also put a list on this page that tells you what I have read, and what I'm going to read. That way, when people ask me what my last book was, I don't have to think TOO hard about it - I can just go here and look! My very small brain forgets quickly, so this way I can keep tabs on my literary smartitude. :)

As soon as I pick my next book, I'll let you know. I might finish up EMERGING WORSHIP, which I started a long time ago. That's my problem: I will start books but not finish them. I have never finished reading THE RAGAMUFFIN GOSPEL by Brennan Manning. I've read 3/4 of it three times, but I have never finished. Likewise, I'm about 2/3 done with EMERGING WORSHIP. That is why it's an accomplishment for me to have finished two books in the last couple of months!

HAPPY FRIDAY WORLD!!!

Only 4 1/2 days to go before school is out for the summer! Well, for the kids. We (the teachers) have to return for two days after Memorial Day. But that will be good, because I have to pack my entire room up and move it to it's temporary home in the library. I'll have a new room next year. However, those two days - as well as the next 4 1/2 - will be used to go through lots and lots and lots ... and lots of magazines, papers, and unregistered books, deciding what to keep/pack, and what to recycle/throw away.

For no reason in particular, I was thinking about the wonderful world of 80's Christian music. Here's the first CD ever purchased by me (or, more likely, by my parents for me):

Ahhh, Bryan Duncan. Y'know, if you replace the cheezy synthesizer keyboard and drum sounds with the real thing, this really is a great project! (minus "Dont'cha Wanna Rap," which is great, but in that terrible aweful I-can't-believe-I'm-listening-to-this sort of way)

This thought and subsequent shuffle through on my ipod was followed by the realization that my first concert CD was probably Michael W. Smith: The Live Set.

Just putting it on here got me singing "Nothin' But The Blood's" chorus of woah woah's. While this does NOT hold up as well as Bryan (curious that MWS is the one still cranking out music), it's still a great memory. I was so sad that I didn't get to see this concert live. I did, however, get to see the Amy Grant "Lead Me On" tour, which included MWS "I2Eye," a much more worthy memory in the 80's Christian market.

Anyone reading, what are your first memories of CD's bought or concerts attended?

So the end of the school year apparently plays havok with my schedule and ability to write down thoughts. Here's why I haven't put anything down for the last week or so, and why until the end of school I will probably be sporadic...

- Spending time with my wife trumps the blog, as well it should!

- I can generally only blog during the daytime, and as you see below...

- I still have two more school performances before the end of the year
- My room has to be completely packed up, because it is being moved across the hall to a (hopefully) bigger room
- Grades are due
- I still have to do the lesson plans for "watch a video" and make it sound more worthwhile (for any teachers reading: don't worry - it is worthwhile! It's Music!!! )
- While watching said video, my children do not allow for me to pack up the room that has to go bye bye
- Sitting at the computer for Church work gets priority over sitting at the computer for blogging
- Travel on the weekends
- I'm still trying to finish my monthly book, and I'm QUICKLY running out of time!!!
- Between all of this, I do like to sleep occasionally.

So there ya go. Naunie and I are headed to Wichita this weekend for Loni's graduation, Pa's birthday, Mother's Day, and I think a baby shower.

Changed my mind - THINGS OF NOTE!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BEN LOBAUGH!!! My little bro is now 21. This makes me feel very old. But hey, I'm happy for him! I just remember the little red head with the round head that toddled around in Wichita. Well, I can still beat him in arm wrestling...

CONGRATULATIONS TO LONI LOBAUGH!!! My little sis (over 21...sigh...) has signed a contract with Wichita Public Schools! She has a real job and will get to pay real taxes! Yay!!! "Who is FICA and why is getting all my money?!"

Nothing of note

Hello readers (I've found out that I have some!!!),

Nothing of interest to say right now. Last week was my first week back in the classroom, and this week is my first week back teaching full time, so I'm remembering how to balance my time. Hence the long pause between posts. Please forgive me!

Having said that, I'm still reading TEACH LIKE YOUR HAIRS ON FIRE, only slower, because...well, I have to teach instead of sitting on a couch all day. My student teacher is leaving on Thursday. Sigh...back to the real world...

Naunie's school district gets Friday off for Cinco de Mayo (even though it's really Cinco de Quatro), so I'm playing hooky with her that day. I'm hoping to get her to take me to see Spider-Man 3. Actually, I'm hoping she will go WITH me to see Spider-Man 3, because I'll be there at some point in the day regardless! It's just more fun to sit in a dark theater holding hands with a beautiful woman, y'know?

So apparently my youngest sister in law has been planning a trip to Texas. She's telling her mom that they have to pack to come and see us because it takes many hours to get here. I'm thinking though that she will have to wait for us to go see her in June or August, seeing as how she's four and can't really drive yet. But Nebraska family: we love you and miss you!

Well, this week has been much longer than anticipated! It feels very "Friday" to me, and it's only Wednesday! Sigh.

I took a look at our pastor's blog (Lee's Laud) and saw some of the great work that our ministry team is doing in Mexico. It is an interesting view though, because every one of the pictures makes it look like they are building a church in the middle of the desert! I'm sure there must be houses somewhere in the area, but each picture has this great looking church frame, and in the background is sand, some bushes, and a mountain. I guess it's on the edge of town (cue the Mancini music)...

Well, I finished VELVET ELVIS last week, and started TEACH LIKE YOUR HAIR'S ON FIRE, but I haven't been nearly as successful in reading this week. I don't feel like I can read in the classroom during my lunch when I have a student teacher there, and evenings have been busy and/or long. I haven't given up on my book a month, though. I'm just glad that I read the first book in two weeks --give myself some breathing room.

VELVET ELVIS was a good read. The overall concept of the book being that we cannot simply accept Christianity and everything that is said from our pastors. Our faith was built on discussion, question, and dissection. We are not lemmings, and we shouldn't just accept everyting on the word of others. The Bible was a living, breathing book in that it was an oral tradition for hundreds of years before it was written down. If it was oral, and quoted, then it stands to reason that it was argued as well. So shouldn't we now still get together to read and dissect scripture? Surely I don't understand everything that is written in the Bible! (and those of you that know me at all know that to be true!!!) I questioned some of his thoughts at the end of the book (don't ask what, I don't have the book with me, and I'm a bear of very little brain. I just remember disagreeing), but overall, Rob Bell continues to be a pastor/teacher that I am excited to hear words from. If you get the opportunity, you should check him out (or the NOOMA videos)

So now I'm learning to teach like I have hair...or like my hair's on fire...or something. :) No, actually, I've enjoyed the first couple of chapters. Unlike the Essential Fifty-Five or the Excellent Eleven, or even the FIRST DAYS OF SCHOOL, this book feels like it's written by someone who's been in the classroom, struggled with the same struggles that we deal with as teachers daily (tardies, testing, discipline, respect, screaming, ...you get the idea), yet still loves what he does. He's still a teacher in LA (as of the writing of the book anyway), so that holds some credibility with me. He didn't write a book, get rich, and run away to show others how it's done. He's still doing it. Ooops: "he" is Rafe Esquith. Sorry about that.

I should point out that Ron Clark is trying to open an academy in Atlanta, and Harry Wong is highly respected and knows what he's talking about. I just like the fact that Rafe is still teaching. To me, it shows someone that still loves what he does.

Easing back into teaching

Well, my first day back "in the classroom" with my student teacher, and we had four out of five classes with free days! So I spend my morning on the playground and the afternoon playing kickball. Not a bad way to start the week. It's amazing, you can buy $100 toys and playground equipment that costs thousands, but all kids really want to do is chase after bubbles! I took my bottle of bubbles out with us, and Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade ALL went crazy running after the bubbles. Screaming at the top of their lungs of course, but at least it was outside where the voices aren't bouncing against four walls and a ceiling! Me? No, I had no fun blowing the bubbles at all... :)

And then in other news, the sun is playing our song! Well, not really OUR song. But a song. Kinda cool if you're a music geek or science nerd. :)

VT Thoughts

I've not made any comments this week about the tragedy that Virginia Tech (and our country) has had to deal with this week. In the last couple of days, we have seen video that give some idea about the mind of the shooter. We have seen a groundswell of support for the members of the VT community. We have seen tributes and memorials. Something that brought me to tears this morning was the marching band of VT performing at the hospital where many of the victims are still recovering. Seeing the band playing and the faces of the victims in the window, smiling and getting to forget for a few moments.

I've heard many news commentaries about the psyche of the shooter. All of them have commented on how he was a loner - how he did not talk, and how people tried and gave up communicating with him. How he probably had severe mental issues. I grew up with some self-esteem issues (anyone that knows me well knows that I still project these issues). I didn't have a lot of friends. I looked down when walking and was quiet in unfamiliar environments. I am a product of a wonderful and loving family. I had more friends than I knew. And I worked my way through many of my issues to become a productive member of society. I also had a strong group of Believers in Christ that supported and built me up and prayed when I didn't know they were praying. I had God on my side.

One of my friends commented this week that all Cho needed was for someone to share Jesus with him. I respect his thoughts, but I have to respectfully disagree with him. We don't know what his background was. We don't know how many people "shared Christ" with him. What we know is that people gave up on him. They looked at him, tried to talk to him, gave up, and began to talk about him when he wasn't around. It does not matter how many people told Cho about Christ. When it comes down to it, there were not people SHOWING him Christ.

Christ never gave up on me. He never gave up on you. When I was wallowing in the pit of despair (figuratively), Jesus was with me. When I had given up on myself, Jesus picked me up and dusted me off, and said "go on with me." He did this not just in a spiritual sense, but in a very real, very physical sense. Christ touched me - was SHOWN to me - by the people in my life who did not give up on me. I'm not saying that if all of these people in Cho's life had continued to reach out that this tragedy wouldn't have happened. But I think it's possible that the people around Cho did let him down in the opportunity to reach out and touch his life because they gave up on him.

There are others like Cho. Others that seem to be mean or odd or scary or alone. Ones that have been approached and discarded. As Christians, how do we respond to them? Do we "share" Christ with them, punch them off on our Witness Card, and forget about them? Or do we SHOW Christ to them, refusing to give up? (the following is a sentence that I thought I'd never actually write - because I would never wear the bracelet) What Would Je...ah, you know the rest. Let's try another one. Whatchagonnadowithwhatchagot?

Erwin McManus

Just got back from the taping of Erwin McManus for the Life Today television ministry. No pictures unfortunately (well, there's one from my cell phone, but it kinda stinks), but he was exciting to listen to nonetheless. His heart for his city (Los Angeles) and for the lost in general truly shines through. He spoke of how we, as Christians, must first build relationships. We are called to love one another, and too often that is not seen in our actions. Four of his books were mentioned, and I was grateful to receive one (STAND AGAINST THE WIND) as a gift. That will be my next read after I finish with Rob Bell.

The air dates for the shows with Erwin are July 9 - 10. Check your local listings, as they say...

Thoughts on VELVET ELVIS reading

I just finished movement four of Velvet Elvis - Tassels. This was the chapter that caught my attention in the bookstore, dealing with Rob Bell's Sunday morning freak out about preaching. In his discussion and healing with a therapist, he was given a great bit of insight.

"Your job is the relentless pursuit of who God made you to be. And anything else you do is sin and you need to repent of it."

Wow.

Y'know, I've spent years putting up a good front - SuperChristian. I've spent the last few years breaking down that wall and image, trying to mold myself into a more real person. But these two sentences still hit me today. The relentless pursuit of who God made you to be. It reminded me of the song, "The Way I Was Made."

"I want to live like there's no tomorrow
I want to dance like no one's around.
I want to sing like no one's listening.
Before I lay my body down
I want to give like I have plenty.
I want to love like I'm not afraid.
I want to be the man I was meant to be.
I want to be the way I was made."

If I am not in constant pursuit of Christ, then what is the purpose of my life? If I truly am going to call myself a follower of Christ, then my very breath is taken with the sole purpose of being more of what God made me to be. The Lord is our refuge and strength. He is our guide, and our leader. I am on a journey, and I don't want to spend 40 years in the wilderness. I've been in the wilderness before. I don't want to be like Moses and only get look at the promised land - I want to dance in the fields of gold and splash in the rivers of milk and honey! I want to be what and where God wants me. No more. No less.

(most of) Hebrews 10:19 - 39 - the Message version

"So, friends, we can now—without hesitation—walk right up to God, into "the Holy Place." Jesus has cleared the way by the blood of his sacrifice, acting as our priest before God. The "curtain" into God's presence is his body.

"So let's do it—full of belief, confident that we're presentable inside and out. Let's keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word. Let's see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.

"If we give up and turn our backs on all we've learned, all we've been given, all the truth we now know, we repudiate Christ's sacrifice and are left on our own to face the Judgment—and a mighty fierce judgment it will be! I love the first couple of paragraphs here - We can, without hesitation, walk right up to God! What an awesome gift! I'm going through Leviticus and Hebrews right now, and it's an interesting dichotomy. In Leviticus we have all of these rules that we can and can't do, and how to do or not do it! To worship, there were sacrifices, rules on what they could and couldn't use, the color you could paint your toenails (not really, but you get my drift)... And now? I can enter into His throneroom without any of that! Come just as I am, without hesitation!! What a blessing! Then the second paragraph - "So let's Do It!!!" We have this gift! Use it! Talk to Him all the time! ABUSE the right to talk to God! I dare you! I dare me! It's not possible to bother Him. He even tells us to - "If we give up and turn our backs...we repudiate Christ's sacrifice and are left on our own to face judgment..." So why would I want to refuse what has been given? God is good, and His name shall be praised on all the earth and in the heavens! I want to be one of that chorus. How about you? Care to join in on a verse?

I have nothing of note to say today (yet), but I REALLY wanted to get a new post up! So let's see - had a great day of worship yesterday. It's amazing to me how God can use simple vessels like us to move His message forward. I didn't get any further in VELVET ELVIS yet - that will be later today. And darn it, I forgot to "borrow" the Erwin McManus book from Mike's office yesterday too! Now I won't be prepared for the interview tomorrow night. Oh well, it's a good thing that I'm not the one doing the interview!

Imus

So here's my thing: I don't listen to Imus. I don't think he's funny, I don't like his cowboy hat, or his show. I don't like what he said a couple of weeks ago. But, really...fired? For making a joke in poor taste? I used to listen to "The Don and Mike Show," and I can pretty much guarantee that they said similar crude/rude things. I know Howard Stern did when he was on public airwaves. How many music projects are inflamatory, sexist, racist, or just crude? How many television shows that are shown on ABC, CBS, and NBC contain similar or worse comments and commentary on our world? CBS has fired Imus for his comments, saying something to the effect of "we feel that what he said is wrong and we don't want the CBS name being associated with such language and rhetoric." If that is the case, then I look forward to CBS going through their entire stable of music, television, and radio, and removing other shows and artists from their posts in order to maintain a positive image for CBS.

However, this also brings up an issue of free speech. Was what Imus said offensive? Yes. Was it inappropriate? Yes. Was it illegal? ...not so much. Doesn't our constitution provide for us to say what we want? My understanding has always been kind of a "your right to swing your fist ends at my nose" type of thing. Words hurt, but they are allowed. If the members of the Rutgers basketball team wish to sue Imus for libel (or is it slander? My "Spider-Man" lesson in freedom of the press is limited...), then I say go for it. You may have a case. But CBS censoring him just seems wrong to me for some reason. Slap him with a fine. Suspend him. But is Imus really the straw that broke the camel's back? Really? Imus? I would have hoped for something bigger than a man talking without thinking. Obviously, I have differing opinions swirling around in my head. As a Christian, I feel that I should applaud CBS for taking a stand. But if that is the case, then should I find movies like MALLRATS or OLD SCHOOL enjoyable? Should I laugh at crude humor if I'm going to act offended when it's said in the context of "real" life?

Sheesh -- I'm ranting about something that I told my wife I didn't care about! Maybe I just need to take a breath...

Picture pages picture pages, lot's of fun with picture pages...

Or not. So I got four people to respond by telling me that they don't see the pictures. I went to another computer and looked...sure enough, it showed up on my laptop, but not anywhere else. Weird. Anywho, there SHOULD now be a picture of my Naunie and I in the right hand corner (instead of an "x"). It's not the bestest picture in the world, but when only one out of twenty work, you tend to quit while you're ahead...well, sort of ahead. But still. Picture. Yay me. :)

1st grade program tonight - woo-hoo!! It's short: three songs. But gosh, if my little rugrats aren't just the cutest when they are shaking their rumps and singing "you brush your teeth! Ch ch ch ch, ch ch ch ch ch!" Some of them shake a little too well -- too much BET and rap videos I think -- I had to ask them to chill out just a bit. *on the other hand, our PE teacher subjected them to the greatest hits of CHICAGO yesterday, so they're probably entitled to a little leeway!*

Hey Look! I got a picture to show up! I almost feel as if I've accomplished something now... :)

My reading list is getting longer. I opened up my book bag today and remembered (re: saw) a book that I bought a while back called TEACH LIKE YOUR HAIR'S ON FIRE. I have the opportunity to go to a taping of an interview with Erwin McManus next week as well, so I'd really like to read THE BARBARIAN WAY before that taping. I don't know if that will happen - I'm not that quick of a read. However, McManus' book is relatively short, so I might work on that one Sunday - Tuesday (after I "borrow" it from Mike). Guess I'd better get to reading!

Boredom

Today I didn't have any church work to finish, school work to finish, and my "holding room" was taken from me so I didn't have a room to practice my guitar. My student teacher is in the classroom, and I spent my day in the teacher's lounge. Doing just that. I did read some in Hebrews, and I read the first chapter of VELVET ELVIS, but it was a long day. I might have to find someplace outside to spend my time, that way I can practice without bugging anyone, and as a bonus, I would get to be in God's beautiful creation!

I found out that we had over 1000 in attendance for Easter - Praise God! I hope that we will have trouble filling our pews this Sunday! I know that Easter and Christmas bring everyone and their dog out to services, but if those people can come for one Sunday, what is to keep them from coming back?

So, VELVET ELVIS, chapeter one. I'm going to enjoy this book I think. It may be the closest to a "serious" book that I will read - you know the kind where the writer is asking legitimate questions and talking about serious biblical truths, ideas, and philosophies. That is not usually me. I'm way too scatterbrained and unfocused for that. But since I have prior knowledge that I enjoy Rob Bell (again, see NOOMA videos), I am able to dig a bit deeper.

Hmmm, that's a bit like people at church. We have added guitars and drums and taken away the organs and choirs. Why? Well, we want people to engage in worship. We want new visitors and curious people to come in, feel comfortable, and want to stay. So we sing songs that they might hear on the radio (or at least the styles of songs they might hear). We "dress down" so that they are comfortable and don't feel out of place if they are not in a suit. We have to be careful that we don't entertain...that's not our purpose is it? My purpose is to worship. It's not even about bringing others to worship - that's my job. Don't get me wrong. I love that part. Creating a worship experience that is engaging is a huge part of my joy. But I am at church myself to worship. Not to be a show for the congregation. I pray that in my worship, I am able to bring others with me on the journey. But God doesn't want show. God wants me. You. He wants us naked and unassuming. He wants us questioning and fearful and in awe of His presence and wonder. Do you wonder about God?

Just an FYI - I haven't been able to post a picture of me or my lovely wife. I don't know why. I obviously was able to post the pics of the CD's, but Naunie and I are, I guess, unphotographicable...

Easter Sunday

Hey everyone,

Easter was a great day at FBC Aledo! Oh, sure, it started early (the alarm went off at 5:00), but what a great day of worship! We had a strong 8:15 showing, but we were packed out at the 10:45. We had the middle schoolers come up and sit on the platform where the guitar choir played last week.

So I'm starting a goal today. I'm going to try and read one book a month. No, books of the Bible won't count (though maybe they should!). I'm starting with VELVET ELVIS by Rob Bell. I've enjoyed his NOOMA videos, and the little bit that I've read in the bookstore, I have enjoyed. So, since I have two weeks of not teaching (it's my student teacher total teach time - I'm barely in the room!), we bought the book and I'm a whole twenty pages in! When I a bit further in, I'll let you know about it.

Just thought I'd wish all of you a happy Easter weekend! It is so often overlooked, due to bunnies and Cadbury, but I'm looking forward to worshiping this weekend with FBC Aledo. We've just finished our "Amazing Grace" series, and with it, we've finished a series of hymns. I love hymns, but I'm looking forward to bringing back in some contemporary worship styles. This week: "I Am Free," "You Are Good," and "My Savior Lives." And we're throwing in a little Gaither Vocal Band, baptisms, and what I'm sure will be a powerful message! Thanks be to God for our Life and Eternal Assurance!

Some weeks just seem so looong! and it's not that it was a difficult week, just long. So yes, I'm glad it's Friday!

I had the "pleasure" of picking out a suit last night...Flower Mound Performing Arts Theatre is celebrating their 15th anniversary this Sunday, and some of the cast of SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD are performing. But since it's a Gala Celebration, I had to find me some new threads. I might even have to wear them next Sunday for Easter, just so's I get some use out of a new suit! Don't worry, I'm sure my wonderful wife will want to take pictures of me, and I'll post 'em so you parentals and grandparentals can see what I look like when I'm not in jeans and a t-shirt!

P.S. - I agree with his thoughts on the Aston Martin from the most recent Bond flick Casino Royale. Great movie, greater car. I was so sad that they felt the need to roll it, even if they got a world record out of the scene.

New Music

I didn't start out with the plan to buy music. When I saw CD's for less than $8, it just sort of happened. Luckily, I have a very loving and forgiving wife...

Glory Revealed: The Word of God in Worship, is a very bluegrass infused album of worship. The main attraction of this album is that all of the lyrics come from scripture. It evokes a peace because of its lyrics, and peace is something that we can all use more of in this day and age. From what I hear, the song "By His Wounds" is getting quite a bit of airplay on Christian radio stations. It deserves the time that it is getting - it's a beautiful song.

Sometimes you know what you're getting into. This is one of those times. Group 1 Crew is the Christian market answer to the Black Eyed Peas. if you like BEP, you'll like G1C - simple as that. However, I suggest that you listen to "Forgive Me" even if the Peas are not your style. It's a great song, using Psalm 23 as a base lyric.

And then there are the albums that you don't expect. Ruined For Ordinary by Nate Sallie has quickly become a wonderful surprise. I hope I don't overplay the music on my ipod too quickly. I'd hate to have the freshness and insightfulness of his lyrics become stale from too much time blaring out of my speakers. Nate has created a unique sound that is reminiscent of Coldplay, Gavin DeGraw, and even Billy Joel (the piano) without becoming derivative of any of those artists. This is why I like him - he seems to be his own. Nate Sallie has apparently had a "life change" that is documented in these songs. Even the title list on the back is a part of his story: "A BREAKTHROUGH occured when I LET GO OF ME, and became living proof, that mine was not an UNDERCOVER BELIEF. Empowered by the HOLY SPIRIT, I sing WHAT I BELIEVE because I am a new creation so take a LOOK AT ME NOW! If all I had left was JUST A BREATH, I'd sing a LOVE SONG penned by the hand of the DIVINE. No longer a LONE RANGER, I've been RUINED for an ordinary life, as I listen to the master of melodies SING THROUGH ME." I look forward to hearing more of what this man has to say.

Spring Break is over, and we're back in the routine of school. But I'm playing with bubbles this week, so I'm having fun! Yes, this means nothing other than I'm a big kid. Sue me.

Kenaniah will be reuniting for one performance only! Sounds exciting, no? It will be good to see Kevin, Jim, Mark, and Brad again. It's been years for all but Brad, and it's probably been a year since I last saw him, too! Also interesting will be how we sound together after all these years. Guess we'll find out soon...

Yes, I still have nothing exciting to talk about. I'm simply trying to make sure I write. That way, I will start something on a regular basis. Some day, when I have exciting news to share, this will be the first place I put it!

Oh, and after 33 years, I think I've finally broken my nail-biting habit! Still working on the cuticle and skins....

In Wichita

It's Spring Break! Thank goodness for breaks in teaching. I know that once upon a time, Spring Break, Summer Break, and Fall Break were all in order for the kids to work out in the fields, but I think that it is now a time of renewal for the teachers!

At any rate, Naunie and I are in Wichita, visiting my grandparents, and exploring my old home town. We might go check out Cirque Du Soleil's "Delirium" at the coliseum tomorrow. Valentine's Day we went to "Corteo," which was Naunie's first Cirque experience. I've been once before. Anywho, we both really loved it, and seeing that there is a tour in Wichita...well, you never know! I mean, what else are we going to do on a Tuesday night?

On a final note - explain to me how sad a person you have to be in order to attack a 101 year old woman for a purse??? And here in Wichita, there was a 95 year old attacked as well! These people need to be caught, and have mean things done to them...
